Touhou Project creator ZUN raises prices of all mainline games as production costs rise, but fans can’t believe they’re still so cheap

"I've maintained the same prices all this time, but I've been told that we've reached the limit in terms of production costs."

Touhou Project series creator ZUN announced a revision to the pricing of mainline games and music CDs on August 13 via Touhou Yomoyama News.

Following this very slight price hike of less than three dollars, all Touhou games sold officially at conventions will be priced at 1500 yen (about $9.5), while the retail price will be revised to 1600 yen starting September 1, 2026. These revisions appear to apply to the physical editions only, so it’s not known yet if pricing on Steam will be affected.

Over on X, ZUN told players, “I’ve maintained the same prices all this time, but I’ve been told that we’ve reached the limit in terms of production costs,” suggesting the old pricing might not have been enough for the developers to break-even going forward.

In response, Japanese Touhou players seem largely in agreement that the games were almost too cheap to begin with, and that the new price is still incredibly low. Rather than rushing to buy Touhou titles they don’t own yet before the new prices come in effect, many seem eager to re-buy their favorite titles at the new price to show support for the franchise.

Speaking of Touhou Project, the series’ first ever Windows game, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, is set to get an official remake, coming to Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PS5 on September 10.
