The Switch has sold more games than any other Nintendo gaming platform, Nintendo reveals

In a presentation to shareholders on November 6, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed the lifetime sales figures for Nintendo Switch hardware and software. The results show that, after 8 on the market, the Switch has become Nintendo’s most successful game platform.

According to the Nintendo presentation, cumulative software sales have reached a staggering 1.3061 billion units (as of September 30, 2024). This means that the Switch has achieved the highest game sales out of all the game consoles and handhelds that Nintendo has released over the decades.

As for hardware, adding up the cumulative sales for all versions of the gaming system equals a grand total of 146.04 million units. To put this in perspective, the Nintendo DS series is the top selling Nintendo hardware generation with a combined total of 154.02 million units sold (source: Famitsu). Therefore, the Nintendo Switch is relatively close to smashing the Nintendo DS’s record.

Although Nintendo Switch software and hardware sales have been far lower in the current fiscal year than last year, lifetime sales for the console have been incredibly strong. With Nintendo’s much anticipated new console promising backwards compatibility with Switch games, we can likely expect Switch titles to continue to sell well.
