The no-programming-required Action Game Maker will allow unrestricted access to Godot functions and plugins, according to producer

Gotcha Gotcha Games, the developers of the RPG Maker Series, recently announced Action Game Maker. Scheduled for release in 2025, the Godot-based game development toolkit is designed to allow users to create 2D action games without knowledge of programming. In a recent interview with 4Gamer, the title’s producer revealed further details about its specifications and purposes.

Action Game Maker is a successor to Gotcha Gotcha Games’ development toolkit Pixel Game Maker MV, which was released in 2018. While both programs rely on visual scripting for an intuitive approach to game development, the upcoming successor integrates the open-source game engine Godot, expanding the scope of what can be done.

Commenting on Action Game Maker’s specifications, producer Morino notes that while games made in its predecessor tended to suffer from heaviness, the use of Godot in the new entry has facilitated development of various genres of 2D action games that are currently popular in indie circles. It seems the new toolkit will be very compatible with the modern metroidvania genre.

In addition, Morino clarifies that Action Game Maker will not restrict access to any of Godot Engine’s functions – “therefore, (in Action Game Maker) you will be able to make any game that can be made with Godot’s 2D functions.” This also means that users will be able to use any plugins made for Godot that don’t conflict with existing functions.

As for multiplayer support, Action Game Maker will most likely support local multiplayer, and the developers are currently considering (but are still undecided about) the possibility of online multiplayer too (which Godot originally supports).

Given that Action Game Maker is all about being accessible even to novices, the program will come with stock assets as well as several game templates at release. Morino mentions that the developers plan to increase the number of templates through post-release updates.

Action Game Maker is scheduled to release on PC (Steam) in 2025, with a Nintendo Switch port planned down the line.
