Yusuke Tomizawa, general producer of Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Tales of JRPG series, recently talked to Persona series producer Kazuhisa Wada in a roundtable interview published by Famitsu. During the discussion, Tomizawa commented on Tales’ current situation and future as an IP, addressing the long wait for a new entry.
Despite the significant legacy it has built up throughout the years, Tomizawa says one challenge the series currently faces is diminishing opportunities for players to interact with past titles and their characters, especially given that there haven’t been any live-service Tales games to keep the playerbase engaged. To address this, Tomizawa’s priority has been to make past games playable on modern platforms as much as possible through the Tales Remastered Project, which was launched in 2024. Since the response to these efforts – including the most recently announced “Tales of Eternia Remastered” – has exceeded expectations, the team intends to remain fully devoted to continuing the project.

At the same time, Tomizawa is aware that a brand-new entry that lives up to people’s expectations for the series are “absolutely essential” for the IP’s strength. “The bar has risen when it comes to the scale of development and other factors, and to be honest, we’ve kept players waiting for quite long,” he says. “While we haven’t been able to share concrete information yet, we are continuing to work on it while thinking of the series’ future.”
Tomizawa considers the foundation of the Tales series to be games and characters that players can “love for a long time,” and is determined not to compromise on that ideal. While apologizing for the long wait, the producer assured fans he does not intend to lose to rival JRPG series like Persona (meant in a light-hearted manner, of course.)
Tales of Eternia Remastered is scheduled to release on October 16, 2026 for PC (Steam), PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and Xbox Series X❘S.
