Steins;Gate Re:Boot characters will literally “come to life” thanks to new animation tool used in development

Steins;Gate Re:Boot comes August 20 with redrawn visuals, a revamped UI, new rerecorded music and voice lines, and animated sprites.

After delaying Steins;Gate Re:Boot from 2025 to 2026, Mages has finally settled on August 20 as the game’s new tentative release date. While certain aspects of the original remain (like the 2010 otaku slang and Akihabara culture), the reboot will have several new features, such as redrawn visuals, a revamped UI, remade music courtesy of original composer Takeshi Abo, a new seventh ending, as well as more character motions by way of the new E-mote animation tool.

Character motions in 2009’s Steins;Gate’s had a simpler quality to it, where subtle mouth movements would indicate speech and artwork changes in sprites would indicate more animated gestures. While this is by no means a bad thing, the upcoming reboot has noticeably more “fluid” animations and transitions between expressions (one could say that the movements are almost “VTuber”-like).

From the subtle changes in each character’s facial expressions to blinking and the movement of their hair, Mages intent was to “bring characters to life” and “elevate immersion in the story to new heights”. While the original certainly has its own charm, characters in the reboot such as Kurisu and Mayuri, look especially vibrant thanks to their new animations and redesigns. This is especially evident when the characters are interacting with one another.

Steins;Gate Re:Boot is set to release on August 20 for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam).
