Square Enix to “aggressively” pursue multi-platform releases and focus on in-house development

Square Enix published an announcement regarding their new medium-term business plan on May 13. The new 3-year business plan details the company’s policy for the period between March 2025 and March 2027.

According to the announcement, some of Square Enix’s goals for the coming period will be the regular release of AAA titles, with a focus on quality over quantity, and a “bold” approach in creating new IPs. Additionally, it seems the company will make efforts to prioritize in-house game development.

But most notably, the new medium-term plan mentions that Square Enix will be shifting to a multi-platform strategy, which will involve “aggressively” pursuing Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC releases with the aim of reaching wider audiences. It seems the company is especially interested in “winning over” PC gamers, as they recognize the growth of the PC market.

Square Enix reports that while they were able to launch many games in the past period, some titles, including AAA and outsourced projects, failed to live up to sales forecasts. This was coupled with higher than expected development costs and advertising expenses. While Square Enix has been practicing platform-exclusive releases in recent years, with Final Fantasy titles launching only on the PS5, it seems this can be expected to change in the following period
