Part two of acclaimed psychological horror denshi visual novel Ghostpia gets teaser

room6 and Chosuido have offered a first glimpse at the work-in-progress visual novel Ghostpia Season Two.

Japanese indie label room6 and developer Chosuido have released a teaser for the sequel to their critically acclaimed visual novel, Ghostpia Season One. Titled Ghostpia Season Two, the project has been in development for some time now, but this is the first substantial look we’re getting at the game.

Ghostpia Season One follows Sayoko, an outsider who finds herself trapped in a town isolated by snow. The town’s citizens are just as bizarre. Unable to die, they have taken to calling themselves “Ghosts” and creating what they envision is an ideal utopia for their kind. But Sayoko is not a Ghost, nor does she belong to the town. Motivated by the appearance of a new Ghost called Yoru, she plots her escape in hopes that she can make it back home.

The combination of children’s book-like graphics with glitchy and static effects has the developers calling the game’s art style “denshi” (“electric” or “digital”) in nature. Though the game may look cute at first glance, it tackles some dark subject matter. Judging by the Season Two teaser, the sequel seems to have retained the original’s Denshi art style, complete with staticky effects. Sayoko’s bloodstained appearance also suggests that her journey will be taking a dark (if not darker) turn this time around.

Ghostpia Season One includes the game’s first five episodes, four of which were released for browsers and phones. A fifth episode was included in the Nintendo Switch version, which was released in 2023. All five episodes can be played on Windows and macOS via Steam (a free demo is also available on the platform).

Ghostpia Season Two is currently in development.
