Shiro Sagisu, Japanese music producer, composer, and arranger best known for his work on the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and film soundtracks, was recently featured on TV Asahi’s “Platinum Family” – a show that delves into the lives of famous Japanese personalities. As reported by Daily, Sagisu revealed just how much he makes from song royalties alone.
Speaking from the comfort of his Paris mansion (a 260-year-old building formerly owned by a Louis XVI-era finance minister), Sagisu says that while the royalties vary with each payment, they often fall within the ballpark of tens of millions of Japanese yen every three weeks (for reference, just 10 million JPY converts to about $65k USD). “When you see eight digits right in front of you, a person can dance.”

Aside from Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sagisu has composed music for anime such as Bleach, Black Bullet, as well as SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon. Movie-wise, he has scored Japanese films like Musa, the live-action adaptation of Attack on Titan, and Shin Godzilla.
While Sagisu’s mansion is already plenty expensive (it costs roughly $1,709,986 USD with an additional $328,843 USD in renovations), he also owns nine more properties: five more in France, three in Tokyo, and one in the United Kingdom – all of which sound just as costly. Just yesterday, we covered the difficulty successful game musicians face in gaining recognition as individuals, but it’s nice to see examples of artists who’ve made it so far with their work.
