The Steam page for Muv-Luv: Tactics Kalidasa at Nightmare, a singleplayer, turn-based RPG set in the Muv-Luv universe, officially launched on June 24. Developed by fuzz and published by aNCHOR, the game is set to release in 2027.
The story is a standalone tale set in a parallel probability timeline adjacent to Muv-Luv Alternative, the sequel to the Muv-Luv Unlimited section of the original sci-fi visual novel. It depicts an all-out fight against humanity’s greatest foe, the BETA (short for “Beings of Extra-Terrestrial origin which are Adversary to the human race”). To combat them, mankind operates bipedal mechas called Tactical Surface Fighters (TSFs).

Muv-Luv: Tactics Kalidasa at Nightmare inherits the spirit of the Muv-Luv Alternative series while placing a strong emphasis on pure gameplay and intense combat. Unlike previous entries, you don’t need knowledge of the storyline so far to appreciate this game.

Muv-Luv: Tactics follows a UN Forces squadron commander in charge of commanding TSFs units in turn-based battles. Each mech requires a pilot (which you can recruit), as well as a loadout that determines its combat capabilities. Once the mechas are deployed, you issue commands such as moving them across the battlefield (which is not divided into traditional grid-based tiles) and attacking BETAs. According to the developers, every decision can determine both the fate of subordinates and the success or failure of an operation, making for a nerve-wracking experience.
Despite the colorful anime characters, Muv-Luv Tactics aims to immerse players in the despair of being overrun by the BETA, offering “the visceral terror of being crushed, body and mind.” Rather than glorifying combat, the description reads that “death is always one breath away,” with the series’ trademark psychological horror on full display.
Muv-Luv: Tactics Kalidasa at Nightmare is set to release sometime in 2027 for Windows (Steam). You can find more information on the game on its official webpage.
