Magical Girl Witch Trials sells over 700k units on Steam and Nintendo Switch ahead of global launch

Magical Girl Witch Trials developer Acacia announced that the title has surpassed 700,000 cumulative sales.

Acacia, the creative brand under Japanese game studio Re;AER, announced on August 28 that their mystery visual novel Magical Girl Witch Trials has surpassed 700,000 cumulative sales since its launch on July 18, 2025. Currently available on both PC and the Nintendo Switch, the Steam version of the game has received over 29,000 user reviews worldwide as of this writing, 96% of which were positive, earning it an “Overwhelmingly Positive” score on the platform.

For context, Magical Girl Witch Trials follows the story of Ema Sakuraba, a teenage girl who wakes up trapped in a prison mansion alongside 12 other magic-wielding girls who have “the potential to become witches.” As their magic gradually grows stronger, their minds are filled with murderous thoughts. With every murder, the girls are forced to participate in a series of cruel witch trials in order to fish out the “true witches” of the group. While the visual novel only presents itself as a “dark magical girl” story akin to Puella Magi ☆ Madoka Magica and Magical Girl Raising Project, the gameplay heavily draws from the Danganronpa and Ace Attorney series.

As of this writing, Magical Girl Witch Trial’s store page lists Japanese and Simplified Chinese as its supported languages. This is subject to change in the future, as Acacia has announced that the game will eventually be available in English, French, Spanish, and Korean. In an X post on July 10, the developers stated that they plan to add the above languages to the game by the end of 2026. However, the release date of the global version of the game might be subject to change as this is Re;AER’s first in-house localization effort. It was not specified if these updates will be added to the Switch versions.

Tangentially, Acacia is currently developing two separate titles with the same creative team behind them. The first one is The Streamer’s Alt Account Labyrinth, an adventure RPG revolving around the dark side of the Internet culture. The other title, Magical Girl Taboo Village (魔法少女ノ因習村), is a visual novel  in which a group of magical girls attempt to escape a secluded village to avoid being used as part of a mysterious sacrificial rite. The latter title is co-written by Acacia and Makoto Kedouin, the writer behind the Corpse Party series. Both titles are set to release on Steam and the Nintendo Switch in 2026.

Magical Girl Witch Trials is out now for PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch. The game currently provides Japanese and Simplified Chinese language support, with a global version scheduled for late 2026.
