Jujutsu Kaisen manga goes on hiatus due to creator’s sudden illness
It was announced on June 10 that the popular manga Jujutsu Kaisen will go on temporary hiatus due to manga artist Gege Akutami’s sudden illness. The announcement was made in issue 28 of Weekly Shonen Jump, revealing that Jujutsu Kaisen will be absent from the magazine’s next two issues (Source: Oricon). This unexpected news has shocked fans, with many posting “get well soon” messages on X.
Jujutsu Kaisen is a dark fantasy manga set in a world where skilled sorcerers battle against spiritual forces called Curses, that are borne from people’s negative emotions. Jujutsu Sorcerers can control this cursed energy and use it as a martial arts-like technique. Since its debut in 2018, the manga has been adapted into two anime series and a film, with a prequel anime currently in the works. It has also spawned several games, including the November 2023 release Jujutsu Kaisen Phantom Parade- which quickly became one of the topmost downloaded mobile games in the latter half of 2023.
However, at the Jump Festa 2024 event back in December 2023, there were hints that the popular manga might soon be wrapping up. Gege Akutami sent in a message to the event that strongly suggested that the story will finish in 2024. His comment read: “This will probably be the very last Jump Fest held while Jujutsu Kaisen is in serialization.” and prompted shocked reactions from attendees.
Jujutsu Kaisen is scheduled to recommence serialization in issue 31 on July 1.
