Japanese indie hit Pico Park: Classic Edition accidentally becomes permanently free on Steam

After forgetting about Valve's platform rules, Shunsuke Miyake has accidentally made Pico Park: Classic Edition permanently free on Steam.

Pico Park creator and Tecopark CEO Shunsuke Miyake announced that Pico Park: Classic Edition (the game’s original Steam version that launched in 2016) is free to play and keep forever. The base edition, simply titled “Pico Park,” for Steam and Nintendo Switch is still available for purchase.

Miyake’s decision to make Pico Park: Classic Edition wasn’t an intentional one. He wanted to make the game free for a limited time, but forgot that switching a title’s status from “paid” to free” on Steam is irreversible.

Post translation: When I got a message from Steam saying, “Hey, you already made it free once in 2021. You can’t go back to paid. You agreed to it when you made it free,” all I could do was laugh. So, please enjoy the free version of Pico Park!

According to the developer, Pico Park: Classic Edition’s status as a free game on Steam cannot be reversed since this is the second time it was made free (the first was in 2021, when the base Pico Park was released on the platform).

Miyake doesn’t seem too distressed by the incident and is happy that more people will get to play his game. Pico Park: Classic Edition continues to receive free updates alongside Pico Park and Pico Park 2. Tecopark highly encourages those who enjoy the free version to try out the other Pico Park games.
