Japanese anime and film giant Toei enters game business with new Toei Games label

Toei Games will initially focus on the PC (Steam) market and developing original IPs.

Japanese entertainment company Toei has announced the establishment of its own game brand Toei Games. The announcement was coupled with the reveal of Toei Games’s new logo and a pixel art animation of Toei’s signature movie opening sequence of waves crashing into rocks, commissioned from game developer Kairosoft.

Best known internationally for its anime subsidiary Toei Animation (One Piece, Dragon Ball), Toei has decided to branch out beyond television, film and anime into the video game market. The new game brand will initially target the PC market (specifically Steam), with plans for eventual expansion to PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Xbox.

Surprisingly, Toei Games’s early game lineup will not include titles based on existing IPs. The company’s goal is to foster brand-new game IPs from scratch, created by both domestic and international developers. The projects will also leverage Toei’s technology and know-how cultivated through film production.

Specific information on upcoming titles will be announced on April 24. You can visit the official website here.

Incidentally, Toho, another major player in Japan’s film industry, recently also announced that it would be strengthening its game business, with both console and mobile games planned. Contrary to Toei, however, Toho will be leveraging its famous Godzilla IP, but it seems both companies have set their sights on breaking into the global game market.
