Hayao Miyazaki may be working on a nostalgic adventure film, reveals son Goro
Studio Ghibli Managing Director Goro Miyazaki has revealed that his father Hayao Miyazaki is currently working on a creative project that might possibly become the acclaimed 83-year-old director’s next film. As reported by Oricon News, the revelation was made on May 24 at a preview for the second part of The Boy and the Heron special exhibition at the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo.
Speaking at the event, Goro Miyazaki talked about how his father has been making “panoramic boxes” of his past films as a hobby- such as the 3D tableau featuring the Warawara character from The Boy and the Heron, which is currently on display at the museum. Goro Miyazaki revealed that he has been encouraging his father to start working on new ideas: “It’s boring to just make panoramic boxes of past movies, so I asked him to start making something new, and he is working on it now,” before adding “I don’t know if it really will evolve into his next feature film, but I am looking forward to it because it is in the style of a nostalgic adventure.”
Hayao Miyazaki’s films like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle are beloved by children and adults all over the world. Despite announcing his retirement several times over the years, the prolific anime director has returned to making movies- most recently 2023’s The Boy and the Heron. The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, is currently hosting the second part of a three-part exhibit that gives visitors the opportunity to appreciate the effort and level of detail that went into the hand-drawn animated film. The Boy and the Heron Part 2: Layouts will run from May 25 to November 10, 2024- tickets must be purchased in advance from the museum’s website.
