Yoichi Miyaji, veteran game producer (best known for producing the Lunar and Grandia series) and former president and CEO of Game Arts, has announced the establishment of his new video game planning and production company KADATH. The company is set to debut with Under Mythos, a new dark fantasy JRPG, which is planned to release in 2028 for PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
Under Mythos follows the story of a cat who stumbles upon a mysterious hot spring inn after it ventures into a strange, fantastical world in search of its mother. As the cat, you will spend peaceful days caring for the many mythical guests that come to the inn seeking repose. However, as the narrative unfolds, the world will gradually start descending into madness, shifting the story into a “cosmic horror” direction.
The gameplay loop consists of dungeon exploration and hot spring inn management segments. In order to serve the guests of the inn, players will have to visit various dungeons to collect food ingredients and resources. The segment also features 2D action-based combat, as the dungeons are riddled with hostile, grotesque monsters.
After safely returning from the dungeons, players will get to use the loot they gathered to further develop the hot spring inn, which attracts new customers and unlocks new experiences. This, in return, opens up new paths for exploration.
Asides for Miyaji, who serves as the title’s producer, the development team behind Under Mythos features many famous names in the Japanese video game scene. Character designs were done by designer and illustrator Atsuko Nishida, who is most famous for designing many fan favorite Pokémon, including Pikachu and the Charmander evolution line. The scenario was written by Takumi Miyajima, who has previously worked on numerous titles in the Tales of series. Additionally, the music was composed by Noriyuki Iwadare, the composer behind Lunar, Grandia and Ace Attorney series soundtracks.
“The peaceful everyday life of a hot spring inn designed to truly comfort the player stands in stark contrast to dungeons, where a single mistake could cost you everything. I have spent many years creating RPGs, but this time we are taking on a truly unpredictable hybrid JRPG where the extremes of ‘comfort’ and ‘madness’ melt into one another. With an incredible team bringing this world to life, we hope players will look forward to an experience that may leave their sense of reality shaken,” Miyaji commented.
Under Mythos is scheduled to release for the PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch in 2028.
