Former FromSoftware dev Hytacka returns with new indie action RPG Overseeker following mixed reception of previous project

Hytacka has pronounced that his life’s “main quest is to create the world’s most entertaining action RPG.”

After more than a year of social media absence, former FromSoftware developer Hytacka, who has pronounced that his life’s “main quest is to create the world’s most entertaining action RPG,” has returned to announce his new project, Overseeker. Built around fast-paced 3D melee combat, spells, and parries, the upcoming action RPG centers around siblings Noah and Ivy, as well as a mysterious tower that appears after a meteor falls from the sky. This is Hytacka’s second independent project after the not-so-successful Rise of Rebellion.

Overseeker’s new story trailer introduces viewers to the world and paints Noah and Ivy as assassins with a moral code. Since their code prevents them from killing non-targets, Noah is understandably upset when he discovers that Ivy murdered a close associate of theirs named Keegan. After the two duke it out, a meteor falls from the sky and causes a mysterious tower to appear in the background.

It’s worth mentioning that several aspects of the story trailer were made using generative AI. This includes the music (generated with Suno), voice acting (generated with ElevenLabs), and the game’s logo concept (generated with ChatGPT). AI tools were also used to assist translation. It’s not known whether and to what extent the game itself will rely on generative AI tools.

Overseeker is being developed by team Hytacka, with Hytacka in charge of game direction, game design, and co-writing the script. Programming is handled by Mitsunagi, who worked with Hytacka on the latter’s previous game, Rise of Rebellion. Yuri Seibu is providing the story and co-writing the script alongside Hytacka, and also serves as a cinematic consultant.

Hytacka’s last update prior to the announcement of Overseeker was regarding the poor launch of Rise of Rebellion in 2025. While the game received some praise for its combat system, many found it to be too complex and lacking in other areas. The developer himself stated that the game “bombed” commercially and critically. Rise of Rebellion currently stands with a “Mixed” rating on Steam, with 43% of 206 reviews rating it positively.

Overseeker is currently in development.
