Final Fantasy 14 fans in Japan are getting horny for Bakool Ja Ja too

Since Final Fantasy 14’s Dawntrail expansion came out in Early Access on June 28, some Warriors of Light have become infatuated with a new character. It’s not the pretty Queen Spene or bespectacled catboy Koana. No, this passionate fanbase has been heating up social media worldwide with their gushing praise and explicit fanart of… giant two-headed lizard man Bakool Ja Ja. This obsession is also occupying segments of the Japanese Final Fantasy 14 playerbase too, and kicked into overdrive with Dawntrail’s official release on July 2.

For those yet to discover his unusual charms, Bakool Ja Ja is a giant two-headed reptilian antagonist. He is appropriately cold-blooded and willing to do whatever it takes to become Dawnservant. Bakool Ja Ja is a firm believer in “two heads are better than one,” going out of his way to demean single headed characters as inferior. He is determined to take the throne by whatever means possible, frequently butting heads (ouch) with Dawntrail’s main character and rival claimant Wuk Lamat.

However, fans of this massive jerk have swiftly filled up social media threads with all manner of thirsty observations and erotic fanart. His glistening scaly skin seems to have worked its way into the fantasies of players all over the world. The adoration among fans posting in English is already attracting media coverage but Bakool Ja Ja has also gained many smitten followers in Japan too- as searching for his name on X in Japanese quickly reveals.

Bakool Ja Ja’s revealing outfit has also been attracting a lot of attention. Not only is he almost completely bare-chested (with some big lizard pecs at that) but he also shows off his bare inner thighs, which some people can’t seem to get enough of. You don’t have to scroll far through social media to find people enchanted by this look, which has even inspired fans to put him in a bikini (Bakool Ja Ja microbikini club is a hashtag on X in Japanese…). Looking on Japanese social media, some commenters are also enraptured by the cute hole for his tail on the back of his brief…er… briefs. “His arm muscles and armpits are so sexy” another opined. Interestingly “Bakool Ja Ja ugly erotic” (buzama ero) is a common description of him on Japanese X, with some people just finding this combination “too hot.”

As mentioned before, Bakool Ja Ja has two heads each with different personalities- Bakool the Mighty is the dominant head and Bakool the Mystic is the subservient one. The S and M connotations of this, all in one body, have already inspired both Japanese and global fan’s feverish R18 scribblings, as have the intrusive thoughts that if Bakool Ja Ja has two heads, he might also have two of something else hiding in his underwear.

People are also having fun shipping Bakool Ja Ja and Wuk Lamat, after all, steamy romances between enemies are always good fodder for fanfiction. With them hurling insults like “snake” and “foolish kitty” at each other, they already have potential pet names. The way he calls Wuk Lamat “foolish kitty” (or mesuneko, literally “female cat” in the Japanese version), is popping up in many Japanese comments. One commenter playing as a Viera jokingly posted about feeling jealous of Lamat getting called “kitty” by the two-headed reptile. “Why didn’t you call me a bunny?” They lament. On the other hand, there are plenty of commenters saying that just don’t understand the sexualization of Bakool Ja Ja; “Has everyone gone mad?” a user asked.

The Final Fantasy series is hardly short of conventionally attractive male characters- mainline protagonists like Cloud, Squall, Tidus and Clive all have their fans, as do brooding antagonists like Sephiroth. But sometimes fans get vocally thirsty over unexpected characters- it wasn’t that long ago that some players were getting worked up over Final Fantasy 16’s big Tonberry butts. It seems Bakool Ja Ja is another such case.

Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail is available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
