Evangelion singer boycotts event over use of gen AI imagery, expressing solidarity with other artists
Yoko Takahashi, best known for singing the opening theme for Neon Genesis Evangelion, has withdrawn from Ikebukuro Animation Philharmonic’s upcoming recital, which was scheduled to be held in Tokyo on July 10. The singer of A Cruel Angel’s Thesis announced on June 19 that she won’t be performing at the concert due to the use of a generative AI image on the event’s poster, as reported by Nikkan Sports.
In the notice posted on her official X account announcing her withdrawal from the event, Yoko Takahashi explained that the stance of the event managers (on the use of generative AI) goes against her feelings on the matter as an artist herself. Although some commenters were disappointed that they wouldn’t get to see her perform, many were simultaneously supportive of her decision to stand up for other creators. “I have the deepest respect for Takahashi-san for making this brave decision, and for respecting all creators and their fans.” said one commenter.
Ikebukuro Animation Philharmonic subsequently responded with an extensive apology message to all the commenters who had called out the poster image for being AI-generated as well as to Takahashi and all the fans who had been looking forward to seeing her perform. “We are ashamed that we were not sufficiently aware of the recent issues surrounding generative AI, despite being an orchestra that loves anime.” they stated.
The orchestra have since replaced the image with one drawn by a human artist and are offering ticket refunds for anyone who no longer wants to attend.
AI should be used as a tool and an assistant, but should but be able to replace artists. Only exception would be translation branches because they are a service with too much redundancy.
*should not replace artists etc. My apologies for the last comment.
