CLAMP x Netflix anime collaboration adapts Grimm’s fairy tales

The results of CLAMP and Wit Animations’ work with Netflix will soon be coming to the streaming service. The Grimm Variations, an anthology anime series based on the Brother’s Grimm fairytales, will be released worldwide via Netflix on April 17, 2024. Consisting of six episodes, the Grimm Variations is set to put a fresh spin on well-known fairy tales that have a dark twist.

From the trailer, it seems that Wit Animation have brought the characteristic style of the all-female Japanese manga artist collective CLAMP (Chobits, xxxHOLiC) to life. Each Grimm Fairytale seems to have had its settings and characters altered in intriguing ways. For example, Cinderella seems to be moved to a Meiji era Japan style-setting, and The Musicians of Bremen appears to incorporate a dystopian steampunk/cyberpunk aesthetic. Other classic Grimm fairy tales covered in season 1 are Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretal, The Elves and the Shoemaker, and the Pied Piper of Hamlin.

CLAMP’s partnership with Netflix was originally announced back in 2020 with work starting on the Grimm project in 2021. Fans have been looking foward to the results of this collaboration- Netflix Japan’s X post of the trailer on March 23 has already been liked over 8000 times, with users commenting in Japanese about how interesting it looks.

The Grimm Variations is scheduled for worldwide release via Netflix on April 17, 2024.
