Capcom has no plans to phase out physical game releases
During a shareholders Q&A corner at Capcom’s 45th General Shareholders Meeting, the company clarified its current stance on physical vs digital game releases.
Despite digital sales and user demand for digital games increasing in recent years, Capcom’s representatives note that a significant number of players still want physical games. Thus, the company currently does “not expect to eliminate physical products.” This means that we can expect to see Capcom continue to release physical versions of their titles for the foreseeable future.
Capcom’s representatives also gave interesting insights into the huge positive impact digital sales have had on the company’s performance. By being free of the spatial constraints of physical retailers and strategically discounting past titles in conjunction with new releases, Capcom has seen unit sales for titles as old as 7 years continue to grow to this day. As a result, the company has become much less volatile in terms of yearly performance. For reference, Capcom has seen 11 consecutive fiscal years of growth in terms of operating profit.
