Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya comments on the franchise’s 15th anniversary

Game designer, director, and PlatinumGames founder Hideki Kamiya took to social media to talk about the Bayonetta franchise’s 15th anniversary. As the director for the first game and a writer for Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 3, and Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, Kamiya played a major part in the creation of Bayonetta’s characters and the world they inhabit.

Post translation: Looking at the screenshots, savoring the passage of 15 years, I’m filled with emotion. The series has continued thanks to the love of the players, so I’m incredibly grateful that something that my passionate friends and I created has been loved so much by everyone. I may be gone [from PlatinumGames] now, but I want all of you to continue imagining Bayonetta’s never-ending journey in your hearts.

Bayonetta was first released in October 2009 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Save for Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, all of the Bayonetta games feature hack-and-slash action, platforming, and light puzzle solving encased within an aesthetic shell of style and sexiness (the latter mostly emanating from Bayonetta herself). While Bayonetta herself suffers from amnesia at the start of the first game, she slowly regains her memories as she travels the world and different realms, fighting angels and demons alike.

Kamiya left PlatinumGames in October 2023 after much consideration, assuring fans that he would continue to create in his own way. Despite not announcing any new projects, Kamiya has openly expressed his opinions on past works like Okami and the current state of crunch in the game industry. If Kamiya does announce a new game, here’s to hoping his team creates something special while adhering to a healthy work-life balance.
