Video game publisher Mango Party and developer Elniko released their raunchy RPG adventure Train45 on June 26 for Steam. In only three days after its launch, the title managed to sell over 50,000 copies worldwide, and holds an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam (based on over 800 reviews) at the time of writing. Please note that this is an adult-rated game featuring explicit sexual content.
If you haven’t figured out from the name of the game itself (the number 45 might ring a bell for fans of Japanese adult content), Train45 is a very NSFW take on the spot-the-difference walking simulator genre pioneered by The Exit 8. Though, please be assured that it will not make you do any funny business with the creepy walking man.
The story follows the protagonist (you) as he wakes up aboard an endlessly looping train that never reaches its final destination. Alongside two complete strangers, you are tasked by Konial, the self-proclaimed master of the train, to investigate the many bizarre phenomena that haunt it.
While the core gameplay revolves around walking around the train and scanning for anomalies, the game also features an emotional affinity system. The interactions you have with your companions will be key to unlocking all of the different branching endings. Additionally, there are many items that can aid you in your investigation scattered around the map, and some of them might even unlock new routes within the game.
Unlike most other games in the Exit 8-like genre, Train45 does not feature any horror elements. You will be encountering many different supernatural phenomena, but even some of the monsters onboard the train do attack you, the game doesn’t make it particularly scary. Detecting the said phenomena on time earns you tickets and other rewards, which you can later use for purchasing upgrades.
Train45 has been praised for the said anomaly-detecting mechanics, a “straight to the point” approach to the story and high-quality pixel sprites. The game also includes over 40 different adult scenes carefully intertwined with the narrative, striking a solid balance between the gameplay parts and the NSFW parts of the game.
Following the overwhelmingly positive reception, the developers announced that they have started working on a sequel. The next entry in the Train45 series will expand the story of the game beyond the mysterious endless train, and “bring an adventure on a much bigger scale.”
