Harvestella creator to leave Square Enix, undecided about next move

Game creator Daisuke Taka has announced on X that he will be leaving Square Enix at the end of April. Taka, who is best known for producing and designing the action RPG/life sim Harvestella, stated that his future plans are yet to be decided.

Post translation: I’m leaving Square Enix at the end of April. Yesterday was my last day in the office. As a game creator, I feel blessed that so many people are still playing Harvestella, which was released two years ago. I’d like to thank all the players, streamers, stream viewers, and the staff who were involved in its development.

Prior to his time at Square Enix, Taka produced Japanese mobile game Puyopuyo!! Quest at Sega and was the producer of Another Eden – The Cat Beyond Time and Space for the game’s initial launch on the GREE Platform. He is most well-known for his work on fantasy RPG and farming sim Harvestella. In these last two projects, he worked with the writers to come up with interesting gimmicks and twists to add to the scenario in order to surprise players. On Steam, Harvestella has a Mostly Positive review status with many players praising its funny and interesting characters and the depth of its story, while noting issues with the game’s combat and farming elements.

In a follow-up to the announcement that he is leaving Square Enix, Taka revealed that he is “completely undecided” as to what he will do next and encourages people with ideas and interesting projects to approach him. We hope to enjoy more of Taka’s interesting storytelling in the future and will keep an eye on his next move.

Post translation: As for what I will do next, I’m completely undecided. Most people say that even when they have their next thing lined up, but in my case it’s actually “completely undecided.” How reckless!
I would love to get involved in and create interesting things, so please feel free to contact me whether you are a pro or an amateur. I’m a lightweight but I’d love to get a drink. See you.

Harvestella is available on PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.

  1. It makes sense he would leave given the fact Square Enix has decided to focus less on AA. But I do think Harvestella was a bright spot that proved there is a market for innovation in certain genres.
