Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Christmas Roulette terrifies fans with too much Sephiroth
In Japan, Christmas is considered a romantic time for couples. But if you didn’t have a date this year, then fear not! The official X account of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project got into the romantic Christmas spirit by posting a fun Christmas roulette that promises to match you up with your “destined partner.” This has attracted a lot of attention because it is surprisingly easy to end up with Sephiroth.
The second part in a planned trilogy to remake the 1997 classic, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is scheduled to be released on February 29 2024. Anticipation and speculation have remained high about this reworking of the beloved PlayStation 1 original. Like the first part of the remake, the original’s turn-based battles have been switched to an action-based combat system, and everyone’s favorite characters are being brought to life in full 3D using the latest technology.
The Christmas matchmaking game posted on the official X account on December 25 is in the form of a gif video. The video flicks through various characters from FF7, revealing who your fated partner was when you tapped the screen or took a screenshot. Users were either delighted or confused when the game showed a high tendency to pair them off with bad boy Sephiroth.
Some players reported that they got Sephiroth however many times they played or that they got him 12 times in a row. Other users pointed out that there were 4 different images of Sephiroth in the roulette, so he has a higher chance of being your date for the evening.
We tested out the Christmas Roulette for ourselves. Out of 29 attempts to get a Christmas date, 17 of our results were the One-Winged Angel himself. In other words, Sephiroth accounted for more than half of the results and in a couple of places he appeared to us four times in a row! So, with 58% probability of him turning up, it’s no wonder that so many people reported getting the FF7 antagonist. (Our results were: Cloud/ Sephiroth/ Dio/ Sephiroth/ Zack/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Aerith/ Andrea/ Yuffie/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Red XIII/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Cid/ Cait Sith/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Yuffie/ Tifa/ Aerith/ Sephiroth/ Sephiroth/ Tifa/ Sephiroth/ Vincent.)
On a related note, it has been announced that the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will feature a system that allows you to strengthen ties with your allies in the game, which may result in a date if you raise your likeability. How similar this will be to the Golden Saucer date scene in the original Final Fantasy VII is not yet known. The original let you enjoy a Ferris wheel date with either Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie or Barrett, but it seems unlikely that Rebirth will add Sephiroth to this list!
Incidentally, a younger version of Sephiroth appears as a playable character in Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis. The mobile game also featured several Christmas weapons and outfits for its characters this holiday season.
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is scheduled to be released on PS5 on February 29 2024. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is free-to-play on iOS, Android and PC (Steam).
