Final Fantasy XVI update 1.21: Inner Voice feature reveals Torgal’s heartbreaking thoughts
Square Enix released the 1.21 update for Final Fantasy XVI on December 8. The update includes bug fixes and new features, but most notable is the Inner Voice system, which even lets you look inside Torgal’s mind.
The Inner Voice option is an addition to the existing Vivian Reports system that gives you information about characters and their relationships. The new feature takes things a step further by allowing you to read the characters’ thoughts about their allies and enemies and track how their feelings change as the story progresses.
One surprising detail is that the Inner Voice feature also includes the feelings of Torgal, Clive’s canine companion. Torgal is a frost wolf that accompanies Clive on his adventures, and he’s quite an expressive fellow. But up until now, we could only guess what was really on his mind.
The feature allows the player to see Torgal’s feelings towards each of the main characters, both when he was a cub and after he became a full-grown wolf. We also get some insight into his relationships with the Hideaway members, and it’s mostly simple and cute observations such as, “She gives me treats,” or “He smells like the ale barrels,” that give a subtle sense of everyday life taking place in the background of the main story.
At the same time, Torgal’s thoughts also reference the more serious events that take place in the story, as Torgal can be seen dealing with and accepting the death of a major character in a heartbreakingly pure-hearted way. The Inner Voice feature gives insight into the mind of various FFXVI characters, but players seem to have been especially moved by Torgal’s innocent feelings towards the people around him.
Final Fantasy XVI is available for the PS5. The Echoes of the Fallen DLC has been released, and The Rising Tide DLC is scheduled for release in the Spring of 2024.
