Omocat’s horror JRPG Omori to get a full manga adaptation 

On November 23, Kodansha announced that they will serialize a manga adaptation of Japanese indie horror RPG Omori. The game’s creator Omocat has revealed a new illustration to mark the occasion.

Omori is a highly acclaimed psychological horror game by Japanese indie developer Omocat. In Omori, you play as Sunny, a hikkikomori teenager with an alter-ego called Omori. You explore both the real world and Omori’s  surreal dream world, making choices that lead you to different endings. The game deals with themes such as depression, anxiety and suicide. 

First launched in 2020, Omori has received high acclaim for its art, narrative and nuanced approach to serious topics. At the time of writing, the game has an Overwhelmingly Positive status on Steam based on 55,949 user reviews.

Though originally based on a webcomic series by the developer Omocat, it seems the game will be getting a manga adaptation. The start date for serialization has not yet been announced, but the manga will be published in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine called Monthly Afternoon. The X/Twitter post by Kodansha states that it will be a “full” manga adaptation, likely meaning that the whole story of the game will be covered. They also mention that the adaptation is geared towards both international and domestic fans, which could mean that it will be translated into other languages. 

The author of the manga will be Konoito Nui, referred to as a talented up-and-coming artist. On their official X/Twitter account, they have assured fans that they will be creating the manga while receiving  guidance and opinions from Omocat and game’s development team. They intend to create a manga adaptation that will be enjoyed by both longstanding fans of Omori as well as those not familiar with it. 

Omori is available for the PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
