The PlayStation 5 to have its largest supply up to date for the 2023 holiday season

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on November 7 via PlayStation.Blog that this holiday season, they will be preparing the largest PlayStation 5 inventory since the console’s release.

The PS5 was launched by Sony on November 12, 2020, boasting 4K visuals, 120 fps output and an integrated custom I/O that enables extremely fast data readout from the SSD.

A new model that maintains the functions and performances of the original console while being 30% reduced in volume is planned for release on November 10. The “mini” version will also be 18% and 24% lighter than the PS5 Disc Edition and Digital Edition respectively. Additionally, it will boast an increased built-in SSD storage of 1TB and a separate detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive.

As the third anniversary of the launch of the PS5 and the release of the new model approaches, an article introducing notable PS5 compatible titles and peripherals was published on the PlayStation.Blog. In the article, it is revealed that this year’s holiday season is expected to see the largest PS5 supply since the launch.

The PS5 suffered from supply shortages for about two years after its release, which led to many retailers selling units based on raffles as well as resellers setting prices way above the suggested retail price. Sony Corporation had even lowered the sales forecast for the PS5, which was revealed in their financial report for the fiscal year 2021. The supply constraints were reportedly caused by a shortage of semiconductors and global logistical disruptions caused by the spread of Covid-19.

Then, from end of last year to the beginning of 2023, the PS5 became available for regular purchase at most large retailers and online stores. In July of this year, the total number of PS5 units sold surpassed 40 million. Although it took time for the supply chain to stabilize, there is now a steady inventory.

After overcoming the supply crisis, it seems the PS5 will enter the holiday season with its largest supply up to date, coupled with the release of a new model.
