Japanese game in which you struggle against “drunk physics” to take a drunk man home to be released in 2023
Japanese developer Yamauchi_games recently opened the official Steam store page for their upcoming title Drunken Way to Home. The game is scheduled for release in 2023 and in-game screenshots and a trailer have been made public.
Precisely as the title says, Drunken Way to Home is a game about a drunkard making his way back home. Our hero is a highly intoxicated male who, as seen in the trailer, has difficulty travelling in any direction, losing balance and collapsing after every few steps. The trailer also shows him trying to proceed along a damaged road, only to stagger and fall into a hole.
There’s no information available on the protagonist such as his age or occupation. There’s only his flushed complexion and inability to stand up straight that tell us that he’s absolutely plastered.
The player’s job is to lead the wasted man back to his home. The stages seem to be set in a modern-day city. If he were not inebriated, the hero could simply walk home, but he cannot even properly climb the stairs to the second floor of the building he lives in. His drunkenness transforms a safe way home into a dangerous course, and dangers attack him at every chance. He gets hit by a bicycle as he crawls on the ground, gets attacked by a dog when he falls and similar.
According to their X/Twitter profile, Yamauchi, the developer, started creating their own games because they ran out of games they wanted to play. Their past titles include dancing chair, in which two old men play an aggressive game of musical chairs and Oneteam Soccer, a football game in which all players on the field are on the same team and perform the same moves. The game is rated “Very Positive” with many reviewers calling it better than FIFA and “the best football game ever.”
Drunken Way to Home seems to have had its ups and downs during its development which started around 2021. Along the way, the developer had given up on the idea of having varying levels of instability based on the character’s drunkenness and had also made an attempt to make an FPS mode granted as a reward for clearing the game, but the results were so jarring that the idea ended up shelved.
Drunken Way to Home will be released for the PC (Steam). According to the creator, it is expected to be released by the end of 2023.
