Super Mario RPG: The fan who drew Geno every day for almost 1000 days has his wish granted

Nintendo announced a Super Mario RPG remake on June 21, and by doing so, they also granted the longtime wish of one fan. This fan had hoped for Super Mario RPG character Geno to appear in a new game so badly they drew pictures of him daily for almost 1,000 days.

Super Mario RPG is a remake of the Super Nintendo title of the same name that was released in 1996. The original Super Mario RPG is renowned as a masterpiece that fuses fantasy elements into the world of Mario, and scores of fans have yearned for a remake or sequel.

Twitter user @Thinginator90 is one such fan and has continued to draw Geno, a character from the game, each day for a period of 992 days. Thinginator began his endeavor on April 4, 2020 with a tweet that included a picture of Geno with the text: “Drawing Geno every day until he’s in Smash Day 1.”

Geno is an original character that debuted in Super Mario RPG. He is an envoy sent from the Star Road to Mario’s world in order to recover the Star Pieces, and fights alongside Mario and friends. Geno is unique in that he is actually a spirit that has possessed the body of a wooden puppet. His heroic yet somewhat pompous attitude is one of his charming features. He is deeply connected to the game’s story and has proven to be just as popular among fans as the other characters. However, possibly due to the fact that the original game was jointly developed by the noteworthy combination of Nintendo and Square (now Square Enix), Geno’s appearances in other games and media was severely limited. The situation was the same for Mallow, another original character from the game.

Thinginator is one of Geno’s most adoring fans. His original wish was for Geno to appear in Super Smash Bros., but when that didn’t happen, he changed it to wanting Geno to appear in a new game. Whether a remake or a sequel, he had an earnest wish to reunite with his beloved Geno in something new. Then, before he reached his 1,000th piece of Geno artwork, a miracle occurred. During Nintendo Direct 6.21.2023, the long-awaited remake of Super Mario RPG was announced, and Thinginator shared his live reaction to the announcement through a tweet. You can tell that the incredible excitement was preventing him from breathing normally, as after letting out a scream, his breathing grew very labored.

The image in the above tweet was drawn by Thinginator after the remake was announced. It’s almost as if the flood of emotions from having his wish reach the stars is reflected in Geno’s expression. Nevertheless, it appears as though Thinginator intends to continue drawing Geno each day until the remake is released on November 17. He seems to want to further nurture his love for Geno by amassing over 1,000 drawings. All the Geno drawings that he has done so far are available for viewing on Google Drive, so anyone who wants to admire the fruits of his long-standing dedication should give it a look.

Super Mario RPG is scheduled for release on November 17 for Nintendo Switch.
