Sunsoft announces remake of Ufouria: The Saga

Sunsoft announced the lineup of titles scheduled for release in 2023 during the SUNSOFT is back! 2 live broadcast. The lineup includes a remake of Ufouria: The Saga.

Sunsoft started as an arcade game developer in the latter half of the 70s, releasing titles such as Arabian and Kangaroo. After the introduction of the Famicom in the 80s, they put out titles such as Super Arabian, Gimmick!, Blaster Master, Super Spy Hunter, and Hebereke (Ufouria: The Saga). On the other hand, they’ve also made some peculiar titles like the Japan-exclusive Atlantis no Nazo and Ikki which gamers have referred to as kusoge (crap games).

This year, the very same company released Ikki Unite, a new roguelike game for Ikki that supports online play for up to 16 players. This time, Sunsoft is bringing back the Hebereke IP with a remake of the first game, Ufouria: The Saga.

Ufouria: The Saga is a NES game released in 1991. The game uses what is now known as the Metroidvania system, in which the player explores a large map and collects items to expand their area of activity, and the company’s official VTuber, Sunsoft no suke, has described the game as “a Metroidvania that was ahead of its time.”

The remake will be updated with felt-like graphics which can be seen in the images released. The Ufouria: The Saga remake is expected to be released within the year 2023.

In this broadcast, it was also revealed that the port of Gimmick! that was announced last year will have rewind/forward functions as well as achievements. Further information on the Gimmick! port will be coming soon.

In addition, Trip World DX, a full-color version of Trip World, will be released by Limited Run Games. The game will be compatible with PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Game Boy Color.

Trip World was released in 1992 for the Game Boy. It is a 2D action game in which the player controls the main character, Yakopoo, in an adventure using three types of transforming abilities: land, flight, and underwater. The color palette for Trip World DX is said to be based on the color palette that Yuichi Ueda, the director of the original version, had in mind at the time.

Further information on the mentioned projects will be revealed in the future, so keep an eye out for updates.
