Kirby and the Forgotten Land has a “Wide Gordo” and fans have taken notice

In last week’s Nintendo Direct, a new Kirby and the Forgotten Land trailer was shown introducing fans to more features coming to the game. Lurking in the shadow of Mouthful Mode, which lets Kirby inhale objects like cars and vending machines for powerful transformations, was the familiar enemy character Gordo quietly garnering attention from fans.

Gordo is a sea urchin-like character with hard spikes protruding from its body. It can’t be swallowed or damaged and has been used as an obstacle to block Kirby’s way in numerous games. Gordo first appeared in Kirby’s Dream Land and has been a part of the series’ entire 30-year history. And now we have a good look at what Gordo will look like in the upcoming Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

But the Gordo that appears in this new world is a little different than the one we’re used to. Take a look at the upper right corner of the recent trailer at around the 2:20 mark. Gordo is looking a little wide. Instead of the ball-like character we’re used to, Gordo has been stretched into a wide metal rod sort of character.

This new Wide Gordo also makes an appearance on the updated official website, and it looks to comfortably exceed the width of 10 Kirbys as it rotates above a stage. Wide Gordo has also been getting attention on social media among eagle-eyed fans that noticed the character.

This isn’t the first glimpse we’ve had of Wide Gordo, though. The character actually appeared in last year’s September Nintendo Direct but was shown just for a moment on a dark screen. But even then, some fans noticed the change and even went as far as making fanart. In this most recent trailer, Wide Gordo was easier to see and grabbed the attention of even more viewers.

Wide Gordo also seems to have left a big enough impression to be given the meme treatment. Like with any Nintendo Direct, not every viewer is going to get all of the announcements or information they were hoping to see. Like how many fans were looking forward to more information regarding the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which wasn’t shown. There also wasn’t anything shown about the Mario movie that’s scheduled to launch in North America in December of this year.

While some fans were sad to not get what they were hoping for, others seemed to cope by saying, “at least we have Wide Gordo,” while uploading images of the character. It can’t be certain what fans uploading the images were thinking, but at least in some corners of social media, Wide Gordo was a star.

If a stage needs a wide obstacle to put in Kirby’s way, lining up multiple Gordo would probably do the trick. Perhaps this decidedly odd Gordo is in the game to remind longtime fans that this is a new world and not everything is how it was in the past.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is coming to the Nintendo Switch on March 25. As the launch of the game draws near, perhaps we’ll see even more unexpected looks at this new Kirby world.
