Umurangi Generation composer teases FIVESEVEN, a new horror game seemingly set in Japan

Composer Adolf Nomura has revealed a teaser trailer for FIVESEVEN, the new game from Umurangi Generation developer Naphtali Faulkner (as spotted by Reddit user Forestl).

* The FIVESEVEN teaser trailer begins at the 15:53 mark.

Adolf Nomura, who also goes by the name ThorHighHeels, is a YouTuber and composer who created the music for Umurangi Generation. Getting into the spirit of the Halloween season, he released a new video where he plays through three obscure horror games. However, partway through the section for the game Vampire Rain: Altered Species, a teaser trailer for FIVESEVEN was quietly inserted into the video.

The teaser begins inside a train and shows text that says, “The Last Train out of Narita.” “Narita” likely refers to Japan’s Narita city, home to the Narita International Airport. The inside of the carriage is dim and appears empty, save for a single gray-haired man. The man, who seems to be named Reegan, advances through the carriage before finding a torch atop a catering trolley. The trolley is blocking the aisle, so Reegan is forced to crawl along the floor and under the passenger seats to get past it.

The later half of the footage shows Reegan obtain a revolver and then continue on to the next carriage where he finds a humanoid figure laying on the floor. As he approaches the figure, it becomes covered in a black smoke, rises to its feet, and begins to pursue Reegan. He attempts to shoot his shadowy assailant, but it’s unclear whether the bullets have any effect, and the scene abruptly ends, fading to black.

FIVESEVEN is still yet to be officially announced, but in June 2021, developer Naphtali Faulkner released a short gameplay clip (seen in the tweet below) that appears to be an earlier version of the game. The unique, lo-fi 3D graphics are very reminiscent of the visual style seen in Umurangi Generation.

According to Faulkner, the game draws inspiration from the Metal Gear, Silent Hill, and Resident Evil series. Incidentally, Vampire Rain: Altered Species, the game that was being played by ThorHighHeels, is a stealth-action game where you must complete missions while avoiding detection by vampires who are unfazed by weapons such as handguns. This is vaguely similar to what we see of FIVESEVEN, and that may have been the reason it was chosen as the spot for the teaser trailer to appear.

The trailer was likely revealed with the approval of Faulkner, and the game may very well be the next joint effort between him and ThorHighHeels, following Umurangi Generation. For those unfamiliar with that game, it is a photography adventure game where you work as a courier in a near-future New Zealand that is in decline.

Platforms and a release date for FIVESEVEN are still unannounced, with the end of the teaser trailer showing a screen that simply says, “Comes When Done.”
