Gundam GQuuuuuuX was responsible for 20% of Japan top 100 viral buzzwords in 2025

20 out of 100 viral buzzword nominees in Japan are related to Gundam GQuuuuuuX, which is more than any other single franchise.

The top 100 nominees for Dwango and Pixiv’s annual online buzzword awards have been announced. Like each year, 2025’s list features a good deal of words and phrases related to anime, games and memes that went viral among Japanese Internet users throughout the year. But among them, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX stands out – an impressive 20% of the entire list comes from terms related to the anime (as spotted by Denfaminicogamer).

The 100 words on Dwango and Pixiv’s list are selected based on page-view statistics from online platforms Nico Nico Pedia and Pixiv Encyclopedia, which is why Japanese people consider them a bit more authentic than buzzword rankings published by mainstream media.

But coming back to Gundam GQuuuuuuX, it’s no secret that the Studio Khara-produced anime has been successful in Japan, the hype starting all the way back in January when its theatrical pre-release version premiered. But aside from being a huge financial success for Bandai Namco, the anime – with all its bold references and reinterpretations of 1979’s original Mobile Suit Gundam, also did a good job of being the only thing anyone talked about every time a new episode aired.

Hyperbole aside, the 100 nominees for Japan’s most viral buzzwords in 2025 contain 20 Gundam GQuuuuuuX-related words, which is more than any other single title or franchise featured. Most of the terms appearing on the list are names of characters or Mobile Suits/Mobile Armor appearing in the anime, but there are also memes like “Char’s survival speedrun,” which originated from the theory that Lalah keeps resetting the world’s history until she comes across a scenario in which Char Aznable isn’t killed.

For now, the top 100 terms are simply sorted alphabetically, but at Pixiv and Dwango’s upcoming award ceremony on December 11, the de facto winners among them will be announced.
