Resident Evil Requiem devs say optimizing for Switch 2 was a smooth ride. “We accounted for scalability from the start, it wasn’t a forceful downgrade”

Many were surprised to see Capcom announce a Nintendo Switch 2 edition for Resident Evil Requiem, but even more surprise ensued after recent TGS 2025 demo footage revealed how impressive the game looks in the Switch 2’s handheld mode. Talking to Famitsu, the title’s director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa shed some light on what optimizing for the new console was like.

When asked about whether they encountered any difficulties during the process, Nakanishi comments, “To begin with, we designed the game to be fairly scalable. We’ve been adjusting a range of options while developing it so that it can support everything from high-spec to relatively low-spec systems.” As a result, optimizing Resident Evil Requiem to suit the Switch 2’s capabilities was a “pretty smooth” process for Nakanishi’s team.

The director goes on to add that “we didn’t just take something built for high-end hardware and forcefully downgrade it, we accounted for various gaming environments in advance.” That said, he admits that when they first saw Resident Evil Requiem running on Switch 2, even the developers themselves were surprised by how good it looked. Nakanishi attributes the success to the hard work of Capcom’s RE Engine team.

According to Kumazawa, a big part of Resident Evil Requiem’s marketing is letting to-be players know they’ll be able to fully experience everything the game has to offer in their regular gaming environments, without having to worry about their hardware specs not being high enough. This is why they made a point of demonstrating the game on Switch 2’s handheld mode and gaming laptops during Tokyo Game Show 2025.

Resident Evil Requiem launches February 27 on PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X❘S and Nintendo Switch 2.
