Chainsaw Man creator’s Kingdom Hearts reference on X has fans worried about the direction of the manga’s story

Chainsaw Man fans are worried Fujimoto's tweet about Kingdom Hearts could be foreshadowing the end of one of the series' most popular ships.

An X post by Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto (who goes under the alias “Koharu Nagyama” on the platform) has fans taking its contents as a foreboding statement regarding the ongoing dark action manga series. Given how invested fans  are in protagonist Denji’s love life, some of them are thinking this could signify the end for one of the series’ most popular ships.

Post translation: When Sora and Kairi let go of each other’s hands in Kingdom Hearts, Hikaru Utada’s “Hikari/Simple And Clean” starts playing, and a lot of trees begin to grow around them. The scene left me with feelings that I couldn’t put into words. I learned from Kingdom Hearts and Shin Chan the Western: the Adventures of the Kasukabe Boys that it’s better for a man and a woman to be apart than to be together.

In the post, Fujimoto references the ending of the first Kingdom Hearts, in which Sora and Kairi are forced to part ways. The scene is memorable for many, as Sora’s goal throughout the story is to reunite with his friends Riku and Kairi (a fact that he won’t stop yapping about to every new Disney character he meets). After going on several adventures and better understanding his role as a Keyblade Master, Sora lets go of Kairi, promising to return to her eventually.

As a lot of fans are familiar with the emotional weight of the scene, some have been wondering if Fujimoto is planning something similar for Chainsaw Man. While Denji has had several romantic interests, his  relationship with Asa Mitaka in the recent issues of the manga is more complex and nuanced than his previous ones. As such, many fans are hoping that the two will end up together.

There is no confirmation as to whether Denji and Asa will go through a heart-wrenching experience similar to Sora and Kairi. Fujimoto has yet to respond to any comments on his Kingdom Hearts post, but given Chainsaw Man’s track record of subverting reader expectations, fans shouldn’t rule it out entirely.
