RPG Maker VX Ace is free on Steam as part of RPG Maker Festival 2025

Gotcha Gotcha Games has made their game developing program RPG Maker VX Ace available for free on Steam between February 4 and 11, 2024. What’s more, anyone who downloads it to their Steam account during this period will be able to continue to use it for free, even after the offer period ends. So, if you have fancied creating a charming or downright weird 2D RPG, now could be a good time to get started.

With its simple point-and-click interface, the RPG Maker series of software allows anyone to easily make their own game, even without programming knowledge. The visual layout means that you can easily create a classic RPG by placing tiles to make a map, adding and creating events, characters, items, and dialogues to your heart’s content.

RPG Maker VX Ace was originally released on Steam back in December 2012. It is an improved version of RPG Maker VX, which brings more powerful and flexible tools. This includes new event options, enhanced new graphics and an even bigger library of assets and sample data. Those who are more experienced have the option to program using Ruby. Once you finish making your game, you can easily create an EXE File so that others can play it on Windows (other versions of RPG Maker give you the option to make the game run on other platforms).

Although RPG Maker VX Ace is over 10 years old now, its free price point means that this is a good opportunity to check the RPG Maker series out if you are not familiar with the software.

This offer is part of the RPG Maker Festival 2025 sale currently underway on Steam. The sale covers other editions of game engine, including the most recent installment, 2020’s RPG Maker MZ, which is available at 55% off until February 11.

RPG Maker VX Ace is available on PC (Steam) for free between February 4 and 11, 2024.
