Creator behind Evangelion’s iconic Cruel Angel’s Thesis opening song admits to never having watched the anime 

“A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” from the hit anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, is one of anime’s most famous opening themes and a popular song to belt out at karaoke in Japan. However, one of the creators behind the iconic tune recently surprised fans by revealing that, even after almost 30 years, she still hasn’t watched the anime. 

The creator in question is Neko Oikawa, who wrote the philosophy-inspired lyrics for the song. In a post on her personal X account today, Oikawa expressed surprise that it is 29 years since A Cruel Angel’s Thesis was released on October 25, 1995. Since then, “many people have listened to it, covered it and it has become a top karaoke song,” she commented. After thanking everyone who has enjoyed the song and continues to love Neon Genesis Evangelion, she revealed that she has never actually watched the anime, adding a simple “I’m sorry.” 

Funnily enough, many people replied to her saying that they love the song but have also never seen Neon Genesis Evangelion. This just shows how Cruel Angel’s Thesis has become an enduring hit. 

On a side note, Evangelion’s director Hideki Anno is currently working on a brand new feature film adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato.
