Japanese robot cat waiter smiles proudly as he makes a huge mess, people love him all the more

Pictures of a popular cat-themed food delivery robot’s predicament at a Japanese chain restaurant have recently gone viral on Twitter in Japan. Users were captivated by the gloriously unfazed grin with which the cute cat robot retreats from “the crime scene,” having apparently spilled the beer it had been carrying all over the restaurant.

The robot in question is the BellaBot, a service delivery robot developed by Pudu Robotics. It is described as a premium, cutting-edge food delivery robot intended for use in restaurants, malls, hospitals and similar environments. The robot boasts advanced navigationing and positioning technology, with an impressive obstacle-detection system and 0.5 second reaction time to obstacles. As far as its price goes, it can be found listed for a hefty sum of 3,565,164 yen (around $25k) per unit.

But above all, the robot’s appearance is adorable – the cat-like bionic design and varied selection of cute expressions the robot displays are no doubt what contributes to its popularity. Recent years have seen the use of the BellaBot increasing rapidly in Japan, with Skylark Group, a company that operates so-called “family restaurant” chains in Japan, being the leading force behind the robot’s nationwide dissemination. According to ITmedia, Skylark Group had introduced about 3000 cat delivery robots in 2100 of their restaurants all over Japan by the end of 2022.

Aside from making up for staff shortages, the cat robot was reported to increase workflow efficiency and customer satisfaction, but a big part of why customers were happy with the cat server was its “healing effect,” in other words – how cute it is.

The robot reacts to human interaction, changing facial expressions when petted on the head.

In reaction to the above-mentioned “oopsie” made by the cat server robot, users were above all inspired by how it offers nothing but a proud smile as it fails at its task, with many expressing the sentiment that “this is the mentality humans should have too” and finding the robot a role-model for how they should face their own failures in work and life.

This event has demonstrated another unexpected advantage of the robot’s design – mistakes are not only forgiven, but found hilarious and adorable. Nobody can bring themselves to be mad at such a cute being. After all, it’s just a cat, what does it know? Many pointed out that as it is both a robot and a cat, this doubles the effect of people wanting to let it off the hook for being cute.
