Upon completing the Chapter 3 mission ‘Monster Hunter’ in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Guardian Zoh Shia is defeated and the end credits roll. But the game is far from over. After capturing a Yian Kut-Ku in the Chapter 4 mission “New Ecosystems”, you will occasionally run into story missions that require you to be a certain Hunter Rank (HR) to progress. Here are all the HR-restricted story missions and how to rank up fast:
HR-restricted Story Missions

Chapter 4
“Chasing Change” – HR 15
“Touring History” – HR 20
Chapter 5
“Premonitions” – HR 31
“The Root Cause” – HR 33

Completing Chapter 3 unlocks High Rank in Monster Hunter Wilds. This is when stronger versions of Low Rank monsters as well as exclusive High Rank monsters start to appear. These monsters carry new materials that can be crafted into stronger armor, weapons, and items – which encourages you to hunt them as most of your gear pre-Chapter 3 finale will be outdated by Chapter 4.
The best way to increase your Hunter Rank in Monster Hunter Wilds is to slay or capture monsters. Completing Field Surveys and Investigations allows you to quickly farm HR experience while gathering important monster materials. To speed things up, certain NPCs in hub areas like the Kunafa Windsong Village in Windward Plains give optional quests with unique rewards (some quests even feature two monsters – increasing their HR experience payout).
As a final reminder, always progress the main story whenever you have reached the required Hunter Rank. While you will still gain HR experience, the changes won’t be reflected on your Hunter Rank until you complete the associated main story mission. Keep building your character with new gear and you’ll reach the end of the main story before you know it.
Monster Hunter Wilds is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam).
