While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 doesn’t have any playable card games (at least, not yet), the turn-based JRPGs that inspired it certainly do. Upon travelling to the Gestral Village, you may run into two Gestrals playing “Double Dyad” – which looks to be a parody of the popular Final Fantasy VIII card game Triple Triad.

Triple Triad is a card game in Final Fantasy VIII. By placing cards on a 3×3 grid, two players fight for the majority control of the board. Triple Triad cards feature popular monsters, bosses, Guardian Forces (GFs), and playable characters, all of which can be refined into useful items using the GF Quezacotl’s Card Mod ability. Due to how rare some of these refinable items are and the collectible nature of the cards, it’s not uncommon for Final Fantasy VIII players to end up spending more time on Triple Triad than on the main game.

The Triple Triad reference in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a nod to the card game’s addictive nature. Since Gestrals are obsessed with fighting, it is rare to see two of them put down their dukes and trade Double Dyad cards. Completing the conversation reveals that the Gestrals don’t seem to be ending their card game anytime soon, which makes them one of the few of their kind who prefer the non-violent approach.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S.
