What Miquella’s items in Elden Ring reveal about his character
Despite being the central figure of the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, very little is known about Elden Ring’s Miquella. The son of the Elden Lord Radagon and Queen Marika, Miquella is an Empyrean who departed for the Land of Shadow, which is a new area players will explore in the DLC. The Land of Shadow will undoubtedly include more content related to Miquella, but there are three items bearing his name in the base game that reveal more about this mysterious character.
Miquella’s Lily is used to craft Bewitching Branches
Miquella’s Lily is a crafting material that can be found throughout the Lands Between and collected from fallen foes in Miquella’s Haligtree. Miquella loved the flower in his youth, and it is only by combining it with a Sacrificial Bud that players can craft Bewitching Branches.
A Bewitching Branch is a consumable item that allows players to trade some of their FP to turn an enemy into a temporary ally. This unique effect is similar to Miquella’s ability to compel affection from others – a power that is said to make him the most fearsome Empyrean. Bewitching Branches can be used to turn groups of strong foes against each other and are especially useful against the Banished Knights that are summoned by Commander Nill during his boss fight.
Miquella’s Needle can stop an unwanted ending
As players progress through Elden Ring’s main story, they will eventually come upon the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds and within it the Cathedral of the Forsaken. By stripping their character of their armor and equipment, players can gain an audience with the Three Fingers – an NPC that imbues them with the Flame of Frenzy. This action locks players into the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending, where the Tarnished takes up the mantle as the Lord of Chaos and is tasked with burning the world to the ground. At this stage, the only way that the Lord of Frenzied Flame ending can be prevented is by progressing Millicent’s questline and obtaining Miquella’s Needle.
According to the item’s description, Miquella’s Needle was created by Miquella to ward off the meddling of outer gods such as the Three Fingers. Miquella stripped himself of his flesh and Golden Lineage before departing for the Land of Shadow, showing his desire to break from his constraints. His needle works similarly, as it allows the Tarnished to prevent the end of the world and offers them a chance to look for alternatives should they so wish.
Miquella’s Ring of Light shows his affinity for magic
Though Miquella has no weapons that are directly associated with him in the base game, the Halo Scythe possesses a unique ability with his namesake. Miquella’s Ring of Light allows the Halo Scythe to shoot two halos of light at the cost of 11FP. The scythe itself scales with Strength, Dexterity, and Faith, making it a good weapon for a quality build.
Miquella’s everlasting youth and ability to compel others don’t paint him as a violent individual, but the Cleanrot Knights in his service are different. With weapons such as the Halo Scythe, they deal holy damage to their enemies; particularly against General Radahn’s army.
Counting the infamous Haligtree that Miquella made to cure himself and Malenia of their afflictions, items bearing Miquella’s name show his inclination for magic and determination to fight against predetermined circumstances. Players will see more of him in Shadow of the Erdtree but for now, they have a good idea of what the Empyrean is like.
The Elden Ring DLC “Shadow of the Erdtree” is scheduled for release on June 21 for the PC (Steam), PS4/PS5, and Xbox series X|S/Xbox One.
