Veteran Capcom game music composer takes TikTok by storm, composing tracks in 5 minutes

A new TikTok account has quickly gained followers in Japan after what initially seemed to be a random musically talented mom on the internet turned out to be acclaimed Japanese video game music composer Harumi Fujita.

The account was set up anonymously under the simple username OkanP (Okan is a slang word for mom in Kansai dialect). The videos parody a son asking his mum to make him some food, but instead requesting game music. In response, Fujita cooks up some super on-point tunes in the style of well-known game franchises in just 5 minutes. The skilled compositions quickly attracted attention with users questioning whether the woman in the video was Harumi Fujita. On July 23, Fujita took to X to confirm users’ suspicions, adding that “I have composed my first Mega Man track in 34 years.”

Currently a freelance composer, Harumi Fujita has made music for various games over the years and is most well known for her work at Capcom. Among her credits, she has written music for games such as Final Fight, Mega Man 3, Streets of Rage 4 and Tomba!

Over the last month, she has gained over 22, 000 followers on TikTok, having uploaded videos containing compositions in the style of Mega Man (with a Sonic twist), Street Fighter 2, Dragon Quest and Mario Kart. If you are feeling in the mood for some new, retro flavored takes on classic game music, why not check out her channel? Her next video is scheduled to be posted on July 27.

With Capcom recently confirming that the long-running Mega Man franchise is still important to them, it would be nice to see Fujita compose some music for a new Mega Man title in the future.
