Unicorn Overlord’s 2D animation shocks with obsessive attention to detail (and sexiness)
Atlus and Vanillaware released Unicorn Overlord on March 8 for the PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The much-anticipated tactical RPG has been met with positive responses, but Unicorn Overlord’s 2D animation and attention to detail seem to have made a significant impression on players. The game has even earned various variations of the nickname “Sexy Elf Crossing” among Japanese users for some of its more provocative character motions.
Vanillaware is a developer known for their distinct style and tenacity to realize their vision, and the same devotion to detail can be seen in their latest title – Unicorn Overlord. The game is known to have taken 10 years to develop. This was caused by the company’s circumstances as well as the sheer scale of Unicorn Overlord, which is the studio’s most ambitious title to date.
The fantasy tactical RPG includes overworld exploration and real-time battles, free party member customization, multiple difficulty levels and a PvP online mode. This is paired with hand-drawn assets and 60+ character classes. Moreover, as Vanillaware’s CEO has revealed, the company had run out of funds for Unicorn Overlord’s development, having to budget the project out of pocket. However, as users have been pointing out, the finished game shows no signs of compromise, and the character motions in particular are being described as detailed “to a maniacal degree.” As well as comments on weapon-specific motions and sword fight sequences, the way that each character gets knocked out in a distinct manner has been garnering attention.
Similar comments have been made about the animations for Virginia and Rosalinde, who also fall over in oddly specific yet attractive ways. Moreover, Unicorn Overlord’s food is no exception either – as the dishes that show up in the game are accompanied by appetizing steam animations as well as jiggling and bouncing motions.
Unicorn Overlord is available for the PS4/PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
