Undertale is a game that wears its influences on its sleeves. While creator Toby Fox makes several Mother/ Earthbound references in the game, he also makes a subtler nod to a Persona 4 song in of one of the final boss themes.
During the UNDERTALE 10th Anniversary – Day 2 stream, Fox revealed that the intro melody of Asgore’s theme was heavily inspired by Shoji Meguro’s Persona 4 song “The Fog.” Considering the latter is one of the songs that plays during the final boss fight, Fox couldn’t have picked a more appropriate track to draw inspiration from. To drive the point home, Fox even mentions that the project file that contains the intro melody was titled “persona4.flp”.
This revelation caught fans by surprise, as it was the first time Fox mentioned the Persona franchise as an inspiration for Undertale. Listening to both songs reveals their similarities, specifically between Asgore’s intro and The Fog’s guitar solo. Now that Persona 4 Revival is in the works, Persona fans will be able to compare the remake’s updated soundtrack with Toby Fox’s 8-bit tunes.
