Umamusume: Pretty Derby player grows so fond of horses they decide to co-own a real racehorse

As Umamusume rises in popularity overseas, the game inspired one dedicated fan to decide to co-own a real racehorse.

While most Umamusume: Pretty Derby fans express their love of the video game in small ways, such as buying merchandise, making fan art, or gifting ryegrass to real-life horses, one fan has taken things even further by becoming one of the owners of the racehorse Jax Belle.

According to Reddit user Oxijinn_, they co-own Jax Belle as part of a syndicate led by the horse’s key owner, Mrs. Cheryl Burton. The co-owners contribute to Jax Belle’s upkeep, which totals roughly £ 6,000 ($ 7,956 USD) annually. Benefits-wise, Oxijinn and the other co-owners get to visit Jax Belle and receive owner’s passes to her races. As to why the original Reddit post title reads “bought” instead of “co-own,” Oxijinn_ says they never intended the post to blow up.

Jax Belle competed in her debut race, the Quinnbet Mares’ Open National Hunt Flat Race, last July 25, 2025. She finished in last place out of 14 horses, which was due to two injuries – one from when a horse kicked her before the race began and another from a leg injury. Oxijinn_ says both injuries have been treated, and the horse is taking time off to heal before it can compete again.

Despite being a free-to-play player in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, Reddit user Oxijinn_ seems to be willing to contribute to that £ 6,000 annual upkeep cost. Fans of the game have been very supportive of Jax Belle, going so far as to request permission to create fan art of her. Depending on Jax Belle’s performance in succeeding races, she could end up becoming a contender or retire to the stables. Not every horse is cut out for racing, but in her case, she can enjoy the attention of Umamusume fans while her racing career is just beginning.
