Haru Urara, the real-life racehorse that inspired Umamusume: Pretty Derby, died on September 9. A final diary describes her last moments.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby fans are saddened by the passing of the real-life Haru Urara on September 9. Famous for not winning a single race throughout her career, Haru Urara’s tenacity and determination earned her the affection of fans worldwide. In what could most likely be the Haru Urara Association’s final diary entry for the horse, representative Yuko Miyahara thanked all association members, as well as fans, for their support of Haru Urara.Ā

We are saddened to announce that U-chan, also known as Haru Urara, passed away on September 9 at 2:20 am due to abdominal pain (also known as horse colic). She remained stubborn and willfull until the end, bidding us farewell in a manner that was truly her own. I’m sure U-chan lived a happy life. Thank you for your support over the years.ā€Ā

Haru Urara

Prior to Haru Urara’s death, the Haru Urara Association, in partnership with the Matha Farm, kept a relatively up-to-date online diary of the horse in her twilight years. Told from the perspective of Haru Urara and a close companion, the entries feel more ā€œpersonalā€ than your run-of-the-mill social media updates. From everyday activities like throwing tantrums about tree fellers to special events such as receiving fresh ryegrass donations from Umamusume fans, Haru Urara lived a happy life both on and off the racetrack.Ā Ā
