Nintendo president and CEO Shuntaro Furukawa made an announcement on the supply status of the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 23. According to Furukawa, despite Nintendo anticipating a high demand and making necessary preparations to ensure a large supply, the amount of pre-order applications they’ve received in Japan so far has exceeded expectations significantly.
Nintendo started accepting applications for purchasing the Switch 2 through My Nintendo Store (on a lottery basis) in Japan on April 2. Since then, the company has received 2.2 million applications – which far exceeds the number of consoles that they’ll be able to manufacture and ship through My Nintendo Store by June 5. Therefore, a large portion of users who applied for the first lottery will not be granted the right to purchase the Switch 2 when the winners are announced tomorrow.
Nintendo will automatically sign up the losers for the second round of lottery sales to save them the trouble, but they anticipate that they still won’t be able to cover demand fully by this time. In response to the overwhelming interest, Nintendo is working on strengthening production. Meanwhile, retailers in Japan are expected to start accepting pre-order applications from April 24.
