Street Fighter 6’s new Terry Bogard trailer sneaks in some nostalgic references to both the Fatal Fury and Street Fighter series’ roots
Today, Capcom dropped a new gameplay trailer for Terry Bogard ’s appearance in Street Fighter 6. They also revealed that the Fatal Fury character will join Street Fighter 6’s fighter roster on September 24, 2024.
The new gameplay trailer not only showed Terry fighting against Ken and pulling off various special moves like his Power Wave and Buster Wolf, but it also sneaked in some nostalgic references to previous games. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice that the first shot of two guys fighting each other paid homage to Street Fighter 2’s iconic title screen opening.
If this wasn’t enough fan service, just seconds later Terry Bogard emerges from a yellow taxicab, mimicking his entrance in the Neo Geo game Garou: Mark of the Wolves.
Although Terry is a SNK character who has appeared in many of the company’s fighting games, his origins actually lie in the first Street Fighter game. Terry’s design originated from the Caucasian guy in a leather jacket who punches through the wall in Street Fighter 1’s opening. Although this mysterious guy did not appear in Street Fighter 1, he would serve as the inspiration for Terry Bogard when Street Fighter creator Takashi Nishiyama moved to SNK, where he would make Fatal Fury: King of Fighters (Source: Art of Street Fighter book interview with Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto, quoted here). It’s fitting that the character is finally appearing in a Street Fighter game for the first time.
Street Fighter 6 players will also get access to the new Cafe Pao Pao No. 6 stage shown in the trailer when Terry is added to the game. This cafe location provides another nostalgia hit for Terry Bogard fans. He will also have a player 2 outfit based on his brown leather jacket and dark blue jeans coord from SNK’s upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, which is due to release on April 24, 2025.
The nostalgic Street Fighter 6 gameplay trailer has no doubt made fans even more excited for Terry Bogard’s appearance in the game, although some fans much preferred his face in Super Smash Bros.
Terry Bogard will be playable in Street Fighter 6’s Battle Hub, Fighting Ground, and World Tour modes from September 24 onwards.
