Square Enix’s SaGa series won’t be getting new releases for some time, according to creator Akitoshi Kawazu

With three releases behind it in fiscal year 2024, the SaGa series won't have new announcements for a while.

Following a strong 2024 and early 2025 for Square Enix’s SaGa franchise, series creator and director Akitoshi Kawazu announced that the next game won’t be coming out anytime soon. As the SaGa team works on a new entry, he hopes fans will continue to support them as they have for the past 25 years:

“In the fiscal year 2024, we were able to launch three projects: a new title, a remake, and a remaster. It will be a while until the next one, but we would like to take another step forward. We hope you will continue to support the Saga series.

The three titles Kawazu is referring to are SaGa: Emerald Beyond, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, and SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered. While SaGa: Emerald Beyond received middling reviews (the PlayStation 5 version currently holds a Metascore of 76 on the review aggregate site Metacritic), fans lauded the game for its combat. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven and SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered fared better, with the former netting an 82 Metascore for its Nintendo Switch and PC versions and the latter a “Very Positive” rating on Steam

The SaGa franchise has a dedicated fanbase consisting of veterans and newcomers alike, all of whom Kawazu is hoping will be patient while the developers work on “the next step forward” for the series.
