Sony’s game division announces acquisition of machine learning and computer vision company Cinemersive Labs

The Cinemersive Labs will be integrated into SIE's Visual Computing Group.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced on April 2 that it has entered an agreement to acquire Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based machine learning and computer vision company founded in 2022.

The move comes as part of SIE’s pursuit of “new ways to push the boundaries of visual computing and deliver richer, more immersive gameplay experiences.” Following the acquisition, Cinemersive Labs’ engineers will become a part of Sony’s VGC (Visual Computing Group, founded in 2024), which is dedicated to research and development of advanced neural networks and machine learning for game rendering and streaming systems.

Cinemersive Labs’ expertise is expected to contribute towards “advancing state of the art visual computing within games,” including applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and achieve higher levels of visual fidelity.

Based on Cinemersive Labs’ official website, their AI seems to be specialized in creating volumetric 3D images and volumetric VR videos.
